Chelsea soaked up everything Arsenal threw at them and never really looked on danger of losing any points with Drogba’s early strike, which was set up by a downward header from Terry, following a corner from the ever impressive Malouda. The second came from a breakdown in an Arsenal attack with Frank Lampard charging forward releasing Drogba as they reach the Arsenal area. Drogba then cut back inside the Arsenal defender unleashing and unstoppable shot which Almunia did well to get out of the way off.

Arsenal threatened on a couple of occasions after this but everything was comfortably dealt with by Petr Cech. Drogba almost made it a perfect day by rattling the Arsenal crossbar with another unstoppable strike, this time from a free kick some 30 yards out.

So with Arsenal now 9 points behind Chelsea, it now looks like a two horse race between current holders Manchester United and Chelsea who with the win today keep their 2 point leader over our closet rivals from the North.

With a round of midweek fixtures, Chelsea could see there lead extended at the top if they are victorious against Everton away if Unted slip up at Villa Park.

Anelka opened the scoring with a well controlled finish from inside the Liverpool six yard box following a build up started by Lampard breaking up the Liverpool play inside the Chelsea half.

Having robbed Mascherano of possession, Lampard found Michael Essien in some space who moved the ball on to Deco. With Drogba pulling the Liverpool defence wide, Deco played in Drogba who then went round the outside of the Liverpool defence and slid in a clincial pass into the path of the onrushing Anelka. 1-0 to Chelsea but the game was far from over.

Despite anything Liverpool tried to throw at Chelsea, the Blue rearguard of Ivanovic, Carvalho, Terry, Cole and the impressive Hilario stood firm. As the end of normal time came to a close, Lampard was fouled by a quiet Steven Gerrard 35 yards out. Gerrard received a yellow card for his efforts and with the ball floated into the box towards Drogba, his skill and strength once again took him around and in behind the Liverpool defence despite the shirt tugging efforts of Carragher, which the linesman flagged and promptly canceled as Drogba hit the byline and slid the ball in to the path of Malouda for Chelsea’s second and the 3 point maximum that was demanded.

Overall reflection was that despite Liverpool’s efforts, in particular from the threat of Torres, Chelsea coped with their first encounter with one of the big four and justified the three points that replaced Man Utd at the top of the Premier league following Utd’s hard earned draw at Sunderland on the previous day.

Chelsea now have a two week break as the final round of World Cup qualifiers take place with our next league match away to Aston Villa, which as in previous season will again be a stern test for Ancellotti’s revitalised Blues.

The new Chelsea Away Shirt for the 2009/10 season is once again manufactured by Adidas. The shirt uses a majestic navy blue as its base colour, with four lighter-blue horizontal stripes on the front only.
